an hours drive from Anchorage is the Crow Creek Mine. This was the richest
gold producing area in S.E Alaska, producing about 45,000 ounces. There
is still gold mining going on here, and they are still finding gold! Although
this is primarily a tourist attraction now, you can still pan for gold here
and expect to get some results. A very photogenic place to visit as well,
lots of old mining stuff lying around. The fees for visiting and gold panning,
and camping were very reasonable when I was there.
