This is one
of the many charcoal kilns need to make the fuel for the iron smelting furnaces
at Fayette. This very interesting and beautifully preserved townsite was
a major iron producing facility on lake Michigan in the 1800's. Fayette
is a State Historic Park and well worth visiting. There has been a major
preservation and restoration project here (thankfully) and there is much
to see!
