This photo
reminds me of some Mayan or Aztec site. But it is where the smelting of
the iron ore took place. The charcoal kilns were located to the left of
this massive (for its time) structure. Fayette must have been a smoky, noisy
place in its heyday. Can you imagine a couple of sailing ships in the harbor,
one loading the iron from the smelter and another unloading iron ore. Not
much remains of the docks, as you can see.
